Explain the differences and similarities between scientific and interpretive communication theories, their research, and a discussion of their corresponding epistemological, ontological, and axiological assumptions with specific attention to the connection to truth.

 

Grading Rubric

  1. Quality of explanation of the differences and similarities between scientific (quantitative) and interpretive (qualitative) communication theories and the research that supports them (60 pts)
    • Clear and accurate articulation of the differences and similarities with support noted below (40 points)
      • Support the discussion of the differences and similarities with references to specific characteristics and evaluative criteria from the readings
      • Better papers will incorporate three (3) or more characteristics AND two (2) or more evalutative criteria into their discussion for each type of theory/research
      • Make sure you are fulling defining/explaining the characteristics and evaluative criteria as you discuss them.
    • Clear and accurate identification of which characteristics constitute the epistemological, ontological, and axiological assumptions for each type of theory. And make sure you clearly define/explain epistemology, ontology, and axiology in your discussion. (20 pts)
    • Use an example to add to your points above—explaining how a paritcular focus on communication would be studied from the different perspectives. Choose from the following examples–use one example to explain how it would be used for both interpretive and scientific theories. You should expand the example in some way to make your writing about it easier (for example, if I had communication on The Link you may want to expand it by saying you would focus on the communication between strangers meeting for the first time on The Link).
      • Communiation amongst a friend group who has decided to start a new club sport.
      • Communication that occurs when asking someone on a date for the first time.
      • Communication between parents and their college-age children.

      • Conflict communication between roommates.
  1. Quality of the discussion of truth (20 pts.)
    • Clear and accurate articulation of the connection between the different ways of thinking (scientific and interpretive) and truth.
    • Note, this really shouldn’t be a separate section, but rather worked into your discussion of items in #1
  1. General Appearance/Format (20pts)
    • Organization (includes introduction and conclusion , Grammar, Spelling, & Formatting (12 points)
    • Proper APA style

  • Copying any part of the text, Canvas readings, or lecture notes (typically that which was on a PPT) is plagiarism and will result in a failing grade for the paper.
